The layered sky, glowing sun, and reflective water immediately suggested a softness and depth that I felt would translate well into felt. I wanted to capture not just the image of the sunset, but the calm and warmth of the experience itself. I used different coloured wool felt and the felting technique as my primary method, layering and blending fibres to build gradual shifts in colour and light. Felting allowed me to soften edges, merge tones naturally, and create a sense of movement within the clouds and water. The tactile quality of the felt mirrors the gentle, almost hazy feeling of watching the sun sink into the horizon. The strong contrasts between warm and cool colours were an important focus in this piece. The intense oranges, reds, and yellows of the sunset are balanced against deep blues and lighter cloud tones, reflecting the way light changes across the sky and sea at dusk. The horizontal composition reinforces the stillness of the ocean and the slow passage of time as day turns to night. Overall, this piece explores how a familiar landscape can be reinterpreted through texture and material. By using felt, I aimed to transform a fleeting natural moment into something tangible, inviting the viewer to pause and experience the scene in a quieter, more tactile way.
